Dan White earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan) in 1988. He began his teaching career in the Lincoln Park Public Schools, where he directed elementary and middle school-level bands and received the National PTSA Distinguished Service Award in 1992. Mr. White joined the Grosse Pointe Schools in 1995. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of Bands at Grosse Pointe South, he also teaches Music Theory and directs the Pierce Middle School Bands. He has directed the South Pit Orchestra for All-School Musical productions, including “Guys and Dolls” and “On The Town”. His bands have earned high ratings at various music festivals, including Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Band Festival, MSBOA Jazz Festival, New York and Toronto Festivals of Music (at which the Symphony Band earned the William D. Revelli Award for Best Overall Band), Chicago Heritage Festival of Music, and Orlando Musicfest. In Spring, 2004, the South Jazztet was one of only five jazz combos in the state of Michigan to be nominated to the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, and the Jazz Band has been selected twice to perform at the Detroit International Jazz Festival (2005 and 2007). In April, 2006 the South Symphony Band earned the prestigious “Adjudicators’ Award” at the New York Heritage Festival of Music. Mr. White is a member of MSBOA, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at Wayne State University. |

James Gross is in his third year as Orchestra Director at Grosse Pointe South High School. Mr. Gross is in his fifth season as Music Director and Conductor of the Dearborn (Michigan) Youth Symphony (DYS). In 2004, he was given the “Educator of the Year” award by Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido for his efforts with the DYS. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, Mr. Gross earned a double degree in Music Education and Viola Performance from the University of Michigan. A graduate of the Master’s of Conducting program at Wayne State University, Mr. Gross has participated in the International Conducting Workshops in Glasgow, Scotland and the Schleswig – Holstein Musik Festival in Salzau, Germany. As guest conductor, Mr. Gross has led the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Pops Orchestra, and the Wayne State Symphony Orchestra. In past summers, Mr. Gross has taught at All-State @ Interlochen and at the American String Workshop in Ann Arbor. Mr. Gross resides in Grosse Pointe Farms with his wife, Carolyn Parravano Gross, daughter Eliana, and son Daniel. |
